What is hay fever?

Hay fever (also called pollen allergy), like all allergies, is a  unfounded defensive reaction of the body to actually harmless, foreign particles. Upon initial contact, the body marks these as a “danger” (antigen) and then fights them in a similar way to harmful viruses or bacteria.

That means: It forms immune cells (antibodies) around the supposed pathogen to eliminate. The result: The next time you come into contact with the allergens, the body has an excessive immune reaction, which is intended to quickly expel the intruders from the organism. These include well-known symptoms such as a runny nose or sneezing, itchy eyes or even coughing and difficulty breathing

Good to know: Hay fever belongs to the general group of allergic rhinitis, i.e. diseases that irritate the nose. If this irritation is accompanied by irritation of the conjunctiva, doctors speak of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.

Unlike Animal hair- or Food allergy Hay fever is a seasonal allergy as it mainly occurs in spring and summer.

When does it become hay fever?

The presence of hay fever can often be diagnosed based on the typical symptoms that occur in spring or summer due to the seasonal increase in pollen counts occurs.

A test to confirm and find out exactly which allergens or pollens the allergy is directed against can be diagnosed using an allergy test (so-called prick or intracutaneous test). which is carried out by a specialist.

‍However, this test should be carried out during the symptom-free period, so it is initially not relevant for acute treatment is.

What are the possible consequences?

If hay fever remains untreated for a long time or if the symptoms are very pronounced right from the start, Allergic asthma can also develop from this, which manifests itself in the form of a dry cough and breathing difficulties, which also occur more frequently in spring or summer.
