What is an animal hair allergy?

An animal hair allergy, like all allergies, is an unfounded defensive reaction of the body to supposedly dangerous, foreign particles. In the event of serious contact, the body marks these as a “danger” (antigen) and fights them afterwards in a similar way to harmful viruses or bacteria.

That means: It forms immune cells (antibodies) around the supposed pathogen to eliminate. The result: The next time you come into contact with the allergens, the body has an excessive immune reaction, which is intended to quickly expel the intruders from the organism. These include well-known symptoms such as a runny nose or sneezing.

Good to know: Animal hair allergy belongs to the general group of allergic rhinitis, i.e. diseases that irritate the nose. If this irritation is accompanied by irritation of the conjunctiva, doctors speak of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.

In contrast to Hay fever, which occurs seasonally, animal hair allergy is considered  perennial and can appear all year round.

When is Is it an animal hair allergy?

The presence of an animal hair allergy is usually diagnosed by a specialist using a so-called prick and intracutaneous test  diagnosed. This makes it possible to rule out that the body's pathological reaction is due to other causes(such as an infection).

During the examination, allergenic particles are applied to or under the skin of potential allergy sufferers. If the skin reacts with redness or hives after twenty minutes, an allergy is diagnosed.

The prick and intracutaneous test is particularly suitable for allergies of type 1, the so-called “immediate type reactions”, because these cause immediate symptoms.

A  An alternative to this form of diagnostics is the detection of elevated IgE antibodies (immunoglobulins E) in the blood. These substances help the organism to fight off foreign substances.
