PrEP consultation hours

PrEP at Avi Medical: Your comprehensive protection against HIV

In our family doctor's practice Avi Medical Lichtenberg in Berlin we are now offering a PrEP consultation.

PrEP, pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a drug-based preventive measure that can provide effective protection (almost 100%) for people at increased risk of HIV infection.
This treatment is carried out by qualified doctors who are licensed to prescribe PrEP. Our experienced medical team in Lichtenberg will also guide you as a new patient through every step of this process - from the initial consultation to ongoing aftercare.

How does PrEP work?

This medication, formerly also known under the trade name Truvada®, contains two of the active ingredients of a possible three-drug combination for HIV therapy. It prevents infection by the HIV virus if it enters the body, for example through unprotected sexual intercourse. It is important to know that PrEP protects against HIV, but not against other STIs, for which additional preventive measures (e.g. condoms) are necessary.

Who can benefit from PrEP?

PrEP is recommended for people who are at an increased risk of HIV infection. This can include people with HIV-positive partners, people with changing sexual partners and people from other groups who, according to medical assessment, have an increased risk (usually through practicing unprotected sexual intercourse). If this risk is present, the costs are covered by statutory health insurance.

PrEP consultation at Avi Medical Lichtenberg

Our PrEP consultation includes three important appointment types that ensure that you are fully informed and cared for:

PrEP consultation appointment:

A detailed discussion to determine if PrEP is right for you.

PrEP initiation appointment:

Before starting PrEP, we will conduct a comprehensive examination of your health. In addition to a basic examination, this also includes HIV and other STI tests, as well as checking your vaccination status and kidney function.

PrEP check-up appointment:

These appointments include regular medical examinations, in particular checks on kidney function and discussions regarding adherence to therapy (is the preparation being taken regularly) and re-evaluation of the indication (e.g. change in sexual behavior). Regular tests for HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) are routinely included to ensure that these can be detected and treated at an early stage.

Access to PrEP and cost coverage

Since 2019, statutory health insurance companies in Germany have covered the costs of PrEP for people with an increased risk of HIV.  If we determine during your consultation that such a risk exists, we can prescribe the medication and start and supervise your treatment.
