    What is the PrEP Consultation?

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a preventive medication for HIV-negative people with increased risk of infection. PrEP reliably protects against HIV infection when taken regularly. The medication is now also covered by statutory health insurance for people with high risk. In our specialized PrEP consultation, we advise you individually, conduct the necessary preliminary examinations, prescribe the medication, and ensure regular monitoring.

    How Does PrEP Work?

This medication, formerly also known by the trade name Truvada®, contains two of the active substances used in a possible three-drug combination for HIV therapy. It prevents infection by the HIV virus should it enter the body, for example through unprotected sexual intercourse. It is important to note that while PrEP protects against HIV, it does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections, for the prevention of which additional preventive measures (e.g. condoms) are necessary.

    Who Can Benefit From PrEP?

PrEP is recommended for individuals at increased risk of HIV infection. This can include, among others, people with HIV-positive partners, individuals with multiple sexual partners, and people from other groups who, based on medical assessment, have an elevated risk (generally through the practice of unprotected sexual intercourse). Where this risk is present, the costs are covered by statutory health insurers.

PrEP Consultation at avi Lichtenberg and Altona

Our PrEP consultation includes three important types of appointment to ensure you are comprehensively informed and cared for:

    PrEP counselling appointment:

An in-depth consultation to determine whether PrEP is suitable for you.

    PrEP initiation appointment:

Before commencing PrEP, we carry out a comprehensive health assessment. This includes a baseline examination as well as HIV and other STI tests, a review of your vaccination status, and an assessment of your kidney function.

    PrEP monitoring appointment:

These appointments comprise regular medical assessments, in particular monitoring of kidney function and discussions regarding treatment adherence (whether the medication is being taken regularly) and re-evaluation of the indication (e.g. changes in sexual behaviour). Routinely included are regular tests for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (sexually transmitted infections, STI) to ensure these can be detected and treated early.

    Costs & Reimbursement

Since 2019, statutory health insurers in Germany have covered the costs of PrEP for individuals at increased risk of HIV. If we determine during your counselling appointment that such a risk exists, we can prescribe the medication and initiate and oversee the treatment.
