    What is a 24-hour ECG?

The 24-hour ECG records your heart activity over a full day or longer. It's particularly important for diagnosing rare arrhythmias that don't appear on a resting ECG, monitoring known arrhythmias, and assessing antiarrhythmic medications. The recording device is small and inconspicuous. You can lead your normal life during this time.

    How It Works

When a doctor wishes to carry out a long-term ECG, they or another medical professional attach the electrodes to the patient’s chest and connect them to an ECG recorder. The recorder is small and compact and can easily be attached to a belt or worn around the neck. The data are stored on the memory card. With a 24-hour ECG, patients can go about their daily activities as normal.

How Is a Long-Term EKG Evaluated?

Long-term electrocardiograms are normally evaluated using a computer. In this way, changes in cardiac activity (in particular an irregular heartbeat) can be identified very rapidly. Doctors review the electronic long-term ECG report. It records the lowest, highest, and average heart rate observed, the underlying rhythm of the heart, and any ECG changes that may indicate a disease. The doctor compares these values with the symptoms described by the patient and assesses whether the cardiac response is appropriate or pathological.
