Who should be vaccinated against Japanese Encephalitis?
Japanese Encephalitis is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes that occurs in many parts of Asia. Although infection is often without symptoms, it can lead to severe inflammation of the brain. The vaccination is recommended for longer stays (at least 4 weeks) in rural risk areas, especially during the rainy season. We advise you on travel medicine and vaccinate in time before your trip.
WHO IT'S FOR
Who Needs This Vaccination?
Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is a travel vaccination. If you are planning a trip to South, South-East, or East Asia and your journey takes you to rural areas during the rainy season and the weeks that follow, you should consider vaccination. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis is also advisable for long-term stays and for expected time spent near rice fields and pig farming.
VACCINATION SCHEDULE
How the Vaccination Works
The vaccine against Japanese encephalitis is an inactivated vaccine. For effective protection, two vaccinations are required at an interval of four weeks. If you are short on time due to a spontaneous trip, an accelerated vaccination schedule is also available. For long-term protection, a booster is given after 12–24 months or at the latest before your next trip.
The side effects of the vaccine are predominantly local in nature (including swelling and redness at the injection site). Headache or muscle pain occasionally occurs.
