What is Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition in which the body's own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. Without insulin, the body cannot transport blood sugar into the cells — blood sugar levels rise. The disease usually begins in childhood or adolescence and requires lifelong insulin therapy. Modern technologies (insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring) have revolutionized therapy. We accompany you long-term with the DMP program and individual care.
TREATMENT
How avi Helps You
As a person with diabetes, swift access to medical advice and appropriate medication is indispensable. Our experienced doctors at our avi practices will discuss with you in your first consultation which symptoms are affecting you and find the right therapy for you.
OVERVIEW
What it's about
Symptoms such as rapid and noticeable weight loss, increased urination, pronounced thirst, or abdominal pain raise suspicion of this condition. If you experience these symptoms, a prompt appointment with a doctor for further investigation is appropriate. This form of diabetes can quickly lead to a life-threatening situation. Consequences of non-treatment include a metabolic derailment (ketoacidosis), which can be fatal. Blood vessels, organs, and nerves may also be damaged.
TREATMENT
Our Treatment Approach
A simple blood test can determine whether the relevant symptoms are in fact attributable to diabetes mellitus. To avoid the long-term consequences of chronically elevated blood glucose levels, it is necessary to achieve good blood glucose control through an insulin therapy individually tailored to you. Supplementary integration with a diabetes specialist practice is recommended. We are happy to help you find a suitable practice and will always remain in close contact with you regarding your therapy. With intensified insulin therapy (ICT), patients inject a long-acting insulin once or twice daily. An additional dose of rapid-acting insulin is administered with meals. Those affected must regularly check their blood glucose and estimate the carbohydrate content of their meal in order to calculate the appropriate amount of insulin. A training programme, undertaken after diagnosis, teaches the necessary fundamentals.
