What is Lumbago?
Acute lower back pain (lumbago, lumbalgia) usually occurs suddenly — for example, after twisting or lifting a heavy object. The pain is often very intense and severely limits mobility. The cause is usually a muscular blockage or irritation of small spinal joints. Most cases resolve completely within a few days to weeks with conservative treatment (pain relievers, physiotherapy, exercise). We help you with accurate diagnostics and effective pain treatment.
TREATMENT
How avi Helps You
Up to 85 per cent of all people will experience an episode of acute lower back pain at some point in their lives. Acute back pain is generally harmless and resolves on its own. However, acute lower back pain can also be a symptom of a serious underlying condition. Begin treatment as early as possible! Our experienced doctors will support you with this at all our locations.
OVERVIEW
Diagnosis
For a diagnosis of acute lower back pain, the following criteria must be met:
- sudden onset of severe pain in the lower back
- the patient has a history of musculoskeletal conditions or disorders
OVERVIEW
Causes & Risk Factors
Typical triggers of acute lower back pain include:
- unaccustomed or abrupt movements (such as incorrect, heavy, or jerky lifting, twisting movements, bending)
- weakened back musculature
- prolonged sitting
- lack of exercise
- excess weight
- psychological stress
- cold, damp climate
Good to know: Acute lower back pain does not always occur immediately after the trigger, but may also appear hours or even days later.
OVERVIEW
Typical Symptoms
You can recognise acute lower back pain by the following typical symptoms:
- severe pain in the back that worsens with coughing, sneezing, and general movement
- a protective posture (those affected are often bent forwards)
- inability to move freely
TREATMENT
Our Treatment Approach
Comprehensive treatment of acute lower back pain encompasses the following measures:
- gentle movements (such as stretching exercises)
- heat therapy
- for acute or very pronounced pain: anti-inflammatory analgesics or cortisone infiltration
Prevention is also an important pillar in the treatment of lumbalgia. This includes:
- back school
- education on correct lifting technique, correct sitting posture, and back-friendly working practices
