    What is Gout?

Gout is a metabolic disease in which elevated uric acid in the blood leads to crystal deposits in joints. This causes very painful joint inflammation — most commonly the big toe is affected. Risk factors are diet (red meat, alcohol), overweight, and hereditary predisposition. With diet adjustments and medication, attacks can be prevented effectively and joint damage avoided.
