How does a PCR test work?
The PCR test is the most reliable method for detecting an active SARS-CoV-2 infection. A swab from the throat or nose is examined in the laboratory for genetic material of the virus. The test is significantly more accurate than rapid tests and is also recognized officially. Results are typically available within 24 hours.
DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis & Examination
A PCR test provides direct detection of the virus: The viral genome — the genetic information of the coronavirus — is detected using molecular test systems (real-time PCR). The testing procedure is characterised by high sensitivity (the higher the sensitivity of a test, the more reliably it identifies a condition). Under normal testing volumes, the result is available within 12 to 48 hours. A positive test result is automatically reported by the laboratory to the relevant public health authority. The responsible public health authority will then contact you and inform you about the next steps and quarantine measures. Until then, please avoid all contact as far as possible and remain at home.
Important: The PCR test is only suitable for detecting the virus at the current time and gives no information about previous Covid infections.
